In the village of Helmby, in the north of England, there was a demonstration today. The demonstration became a riot. Some people were hurt. Others were arrested. Our reporter, Ian Keys, has been in the village all day.
This is what the trouble was about. The plan to build an atomic power station here. If the government builds it, it will be one of the largest in Europe. It will produce enough energy for three cities the size of Manchester.
10

But not everybody agrees with the plan. Early this morning a large group of people gathered to demonstrate against it. They marched slowly through the village in the heavy rain. At first everything was calm. The police watch quietly.
15

But then some of the demonstrators tried to march into a field where work on the first part of the station had just begun. The police stopped them. Fighting began. Stone were thrown. When the trouble began, more police came quickly. Arrests were made. The police pushed the demonstrators back into the village. Shop windows were smashed. More arrests were made.
20

Now, at the end of the day, at least 50 demonstrators have been arrested. Several policemen were badly hurt in the fighting and are now in hospital. But things are quiet and calm in the village again. It is still raining heavily.
